Interesting (read: conflicted) read

I’ve been tuning in to this blog, Gaping Void which is written by a reformed(?) advertising guy out of London.

He draws these really good cartoons, typically on business cards. Funny, spot-on. The whole nine.

Then he writes about this idea of blogging as a advertising/marketing killer (much the way that an iRiver is an iPod killer — and all that that implies)

He’s had some solid success in getting small companies to self-market via weblogs, notably a wine maker and a high-end tailor.

However, he has this nauseating habit of framing things in this ‘party like it’s 1997′ language of the god awful dot-bomb manifesto Clue Train.

It’s so infuriating. I hate with a fiery passion all of the marketing non-sense that came from that era. I think back to companies like Razor Fish firing Sony because Sony wasn’t with it.

I have the same reaction to any numb-nut who uses the phrase “Web 2.0″

It all reeks of clueless idiots somehow managing to convince other clueless idiots — with money — to fork over said money for pixie dust and moonbeams.

So.

This makes the blog an interesting read. I mean. The Pathos. One minute I’m amused by clever artwork and pithy turn of phrase, the next I’m dismissing a nimrod who clearly hasn’t been paying attention since sometime in 2000, then I have to admit “well he’s been successful so far…”
