The metafilter has a thread: http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/50448
…relating to this article: http://newyorkmetro.com/news/features/16529/index.html
I don’t have much to offer that the metafilter discussion doesn’t already cover.
It’s a nauseating piece on 30-somethings in New York who are wealthy enough to maintain a “youthful” lifestyle, indicated by high fashion clothes, cool haircuts, and expensive toys.
Eight pages of band-name dropping see-how-cool-I-still-am crap.
The article mistakenly assumes a small subset of Manhattan Island represents some larger zeitgeist, but what I find interesting is the degree to which I, and the posters on metafilter, find the article so — just — bleh.
Well, obviously, it strikes a little close to home. I fit a lot of the stereotypes trotted out in that article. I carry an iPod. I mess up my hair on purpose. I still enjoy going out, etc, etc. When this article paints a vapid portrait of people who are doing the same thing that generations of our predecessors have done, it’s insulting.
I do think there is a grain of truth in the perception that people are “acting younger longer”. What do you think “business casual” is all about?
Because I’m intrinsically contrarian, I’ve found it to be a lot of fun to start wearing ties to work here and there. It always causes a stir. People ask, under their breath, “do you have a job interview?” Old school cats lament the days when they had to wear a tie every day.
It’s so anti-hip, that it’s hip. What? Why are you rolling your eyes?
